BYRON Hinterlands

Get distracted in the Byron hinterlands. It's a delightful drive, sprinkled with unique spots to stop along the way.

No bright lights - But definitely some pretty sights

A drive around the hinterlands is a relaxing experience in calming surrounds. There's several routes you can take including from Murwillumbah in the north. This is just one I have done from a little further south. About 25 minutes from Newrybar via Lismore Road and 35 minutes from Ballina via Tamarind Drive you will reach CLUNES VILLAGE. It's a tiny town in relaxing surrounds where you can grab some basic goodies, picnic in the park and enjoy the fresh smells and sounds of the hinterland. Next stop DUNOON, there's not much here but it's the drive that counts - you wind around macadamia and other food producing farms, lush green rural scenery and occasionally you will see a roadside offer of some locally grown produce. Just up the road is the CHANNON, Feel like an ale (if you aren't the driver of course) or a pub feed? Check out the laid back local pub. There's also a gallery if you are keen to browse. On the second Sunday of the month, it you are there then, you get to experience The Channon markets. Not only can you buy cool stuff but it really gets you in the groove with the hinterland lifestyle.

Just up the road is Nimbin - about 10 minutes. You can see more of it on this site. A stroll around Nimbin will certainly give you some alternative memories of your explorations along the coast. When heading out there's a few different routes, but if driving south, via COOLMANGAR to Lismore is comfy trip and you get to experience one last blast of the character that makes this region a special place. Or you can keep going to Murwillumbah in the north if heading to Queensland. It does mean you will bypass most of the coast, but you will see some other cool things. See the link below.
