NIMBIN

Get distracted in Nimbin. Experience something slightly different from the norm. Bring out your hippie!

Cullen Street - Sprinkles of colour all around

Nimbin is a bit of a drive off the highway but it's a comfy trip with some quaint little towns and natural distractions in between if you want to make a day of it. It's about 1 hour from the south via Lismore. Turn off at Broadwater or Wardell (on the highway) or just south of Ballina. If coming from the north, via Mullumbimby it's a bit of a trek. Best to head down towards Byron Bay and turn off to Bangalow (to the west). This will also take about 1 hour. The drive in is picturesque and slightly mountainous, but if you take it easy it's a pleasant trip that helps you unwind and certainly gets you in the groove for what's to come.

When you get to Nimbin you are greeted by a sudden bunch of visual treats - The main street, the buildings, the parks and the local peeps. If you like to browse unusual shops, pick up peculiar gifts, need some out of the ordinary essentials for the road (or even just some normal stuff) you will find them here. Hungry? There's plenty of goodies along the main street. Looking for a bit of the hippie culture from the Age of Aquarius, it's scattered all around town and the locals will willingly help you to bring it to life. If you are there in May you might get to experience a blast from the past at the Nimbin Mardigras or September at the Nimbin Roots Festival. Want to know more? Check out the links below.

Want to walk the dog? You may see some on leashes in the main street but just check with the locals about the rules. For some, Nimbin may not be your cup of tea, but it is at least a once in a lifetime 'must see'. Others of you may decide to stay - it's happened many times before !
